Difficulty Assessment of Ski Routes

This guide uses the same difficulty evaluation of the SAC ski route guides. If the routes are described in the SAC Skitourenführer Zentralschweiz-Tessin (1993), the difficulty evaluation was taken from there. The other routes were estimated by the author according to the criteria specified below.

The difficulty evaluation covers only the route to the ski depot and the descend from there.

MS Average skier

Landscape: Flat to moderately steep. Only a few, short steep spots. Bottlenecks are flat or can be well slipped sideward. No or few ditches and embossments. Slipping danger small.

GS Good skier

Landscape: Moderately steep to steep area. Steep passages offer still much freedom of movement. Some bottlenecks require swings. Increases ditches and embossment. Slipping danger.

SGS Very good skier

Landscape: Steep to very steep area, which must usually be mastered in the direct fall line. Many bottlenecks, often consecutively. Narrow ridges, which are to be driven off with short swings in the fall line. Rough area. To slip can lead to serious consequences (falling over rock faces or into deep ditches, etc.).

MAS Average alpine skier Landscape and ski-technical difficulties are the same as for MS, GS and SGS, but with the additional alpine difficulties which are outlined below
GAS Good alpine skier
SGAS Very good alpine skier
Additional dangers and challenges for MAS, GAS, and SGAS: Glacier crevasses, sections of the way where steps must be made with the ice axe, sections of the way which are done with the skis on the backpack, climbing may be required. The use of rope, ice axe and crampons may be necessary.
